Caledonia

Identity: "History and Nature - Year Round"

Attractions:  Historic Buildings (cabin, town hall, school, church on fairground site)

                       Caledonia Commercial Historic District

                       1875 Jail

                       1883 Courthouse

                       Turkey Capital of Minnesota

                                                               Beaver Creek State Park

History: One of the oldest cities in Minnesota and also the birthplace of David Kunst, the first man to circle the globe on foot.

Celebration:  Founders Day (June)

 

Brownsville

Identity: "It Just Keeps Rollin' Along"

Attractions:  Mighty Mississippi                       

                        Steamboats

                        Wildcat Landing

                        Historical Sites

History: Brownsville, located on the far eastern edge of Houston County, sitting at the foot of Wildcat Bluff beside the "Mighty" Mississippi River.  Running north and south through the city is "The Great River Road" (Minnesota Highway 26).

Money Creek

Identity: "547 and growing"

Attractions: Money Creek Haven Campground

                       United Methodist Church (built 1910)

History: Supposedly Money Creek township (Houston County) was named for the creek here, which was in turn named after a man got his pocketbook and contents wet in the creek and spread out the bank notes on a bush to dry. A sudden gust of wind blew them into the water again, and some of it was never recovered.
