Off the Byway

Wykoff

Identity: "All Aboard"

Attractions:  T-town Plan (main commercial street is perpendicular to railroad)

                        Ed's Museum (features Jack Sprat grocery items from the 1930's)                       

History: Wykoff is a town born of the rails: the South Minnesota Railroad platted the village in 1871 and named it after company president, Cyrus Gates Wykoff.

 

 

Fountain

Identity: "High-Flying Pursuits _ Pietenpol Airplanes"

Attractions:  "Sinkhole Capital of the USA"

                        Fillmore County History Center

                        Fillmore County Genealogy Library 

                        Pietenpol Air Camper and Sky Scout

History: In the 1920's, from his garage in nearby Cherry Grove, Bernard Pietenpol designed and constructed a homemade airplane using parts from the hardware store a a Model T Ford engine. He has been acknowledged as "the father of the home built aircraft movement in the United States"

Chatfield

 

Identity: "Bandtown USA"

Attractions: Chatfield City Music Lending Library

                       Chatfield City Park Bandshell

                        Victorian Houses 

History: It took almost 100 years and even more musicians for Chatfield to become known as "Bandtown USA." In 1882, first brass band formed.

Celebration: Western Days (2nd weekend in August)

Harmony

Identity: "Amish Buggy Byway"

Attractions: Amish Buggy Byway                 

                        Harmony-Preston Valley State Bike Trail

                        Niagara Cave   

                        Slim's Woodshed

History: Harmony is appropriately named: visitors to this city will find a special kind of harmony between the citizens of the town and the Old Order Amish population in the rural areas surrounding it.

Celebration: Old Fashioned Fourth of July

                                                             Fall Foliage Fest (Oct. 6-8)
