Rushford Village

Identity: "Life on the Forest Edge"

Attractions:  "Root River Trail"

                        Richard J. Dorer Hardwood State  Forest

                        One of Best Places in Minnesota for:

                        Mountain Biking, Horseback Riding, Bird

                        Watching, and Fall-Color Touring

History: The City of Rushford Village could be known as "the city surrounding a city" because the "village" surrounds the cities of Rushford and Peterson, making this an unusual place.

 

 

Houston

Identity: "Back to Nature"

Attractions:  "Byway" is the Main Street of Houston

                        "Root River Bike Trail"

                        Wildlife Haven - Animals and Plants

                        Native to the Prairie and Wetlands

                        Houston Nature Center (Alice, the Great

                        Horned Owl Resides Here)

History: William McSpadden, who served in the military under the legendary Sam Houston of Texas, named the town and settled his family here.

Hokah

Identity: "Native Earth - The Native American       

                Experience"

Attractions: Mount Tom

                       Como Falls

                       Distinctive Landforms in the River Valley 

History: Euro-American settlers established the town of Hokah in the 1850's, but, Dakota people had called it home long before. In fact, for millennia, people have been drawn to the fertile land, rushing waters, and towering bluffs of the Root River Valley.

La Crescent

Identity: "Birthplace of Minnesota Apples"

Attractions: "Apple Capital of Minnesota"                  

                        Crossroads for Two Other Scenic  

                        Byways

History: In the mid-1800's, Minnesota was no place to grow an apple. It was just too cold. At least until John S. Harris of La Crescent developed a strain of apple trees that could sustain the harsh winters.
